Presentation

In Spain, approximately 80.000 people have some type of amputation, that is, 1.8 per thousand people of the Spanish population according to data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics in 2008 and it is a figure that is currently on the rise. 

The therapeutic approach to the amputee patient must be considered from a multidisciplinary perspective, integrating professionals from different healthcare fields: doctors specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, nursing, occupational therapists, orthopedic technicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, etc. 

The main objective of the team treating the amputee patient must be to achieve the greatest possible autonomy and functionality at a loco-regional level and also globally in the body scheme as a whole given the loss of the affected limb(s). The rehabilitation of the amputee patient must therefore consider the use and utilization and control of the prosthesis to achieve maximum independence in daily, professional and recreational activities. This rehabilitation must not be limited to prosthetic adaptation but must take into account the initial recovery process and the very important comprehensive care system from the beginning of the hospital phase. The result and evolution of the rehabilitation process of the amputee patient must be accompanied by specific assessment scales with respect to functionality. Currently, there are important technological advances, both in prosthetic components and in the assessment of the amputee's bodily damage, thus allowing better biomechanical knowledge, gait analysis, prosthetic adaptation, etc. and problems arising from the techniques used. 

This course is aimed at the healthcare professional looking to train in, deepen or update their knowledge in amputee care, offering comprehensive monitoring from the beginning of the process to full recovery.

Access requirements

It can be accessed by graduates in health sciences: Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Senior Orthopedic Technicians, Psychologists or any healthcare professional who works or has an interest in the amputee patient.

No previous training requirements are needed within the specific field. 

What will the student learn?

During the course, the student will learn to:

  • Improve the competence of the physiotherapist and any of the professionals who care for the patient in the rehabilitation process of a person who has suffered an amputation.
  • Provide manual tools and skills in the medical-rehabilitative treatment of the amputee.
  • Understand the different levels of amputation and their functional prognosis.
  • Know the times and treatment in each phase of the process, from amputation to prosthetic functionality.
  • Analyze the difference between phantom limb syndrome / neuropathic pain / stump neuroma and know their approach.
  • Acquire the skill in carrying out the therapeutic approach from different areas: the stump dressing, proposed therapeutic exercise, pain treatment, gait reeducation, reeducation of ADLs with occupational therapy, psychological care, etc.
  • Learn the correct placement of the different suspension, fitting, and prosthetic systems.
  • Identify the phases of gait in the amputee and their re-education.

Methodology

The course methodology will be divided into:

  • Theoretical sessions: where the contents will be worked on through face-to-face sessions of approximately 90 minutes, with the possibility of interacting with the teachers. An update will be made on the subject with scientific evidence and bibliographic support.
  • Practical part: dedicated to the consolidation of theoretical content through workshops with prosthetic material for both upper and lower limbs. In the lower limb part, walking workshops, trunk wraps and clinical cases will be held, and in the upper limb part, virtual reality workshops, surface electromyography, use of bionic hand phantoms, use of analgesic TENS and mirror therapy will be held. 
  • Virtual Classroom: The students will have access to the didactic material through the Virtual Classroom to be able to work with it outside the classroom as well and thus achieve participatory classes.

1st seminar: INTEGRAL RHB OF THE EEII AMPUTATED PATIENT

Friday 2 October from 9am to 6.30pm.

  • Epidemiology, causes and levels of amputation.  
  • Surgery of lower limb amputations. Functional classification of lower limb amputees.  
  • Osseointegration and other surgical techniques. New developments in prosthetics
  • Evidence in the joints, prosthetic knees and prosthetic feet.  
  • Prosthesis in amputations below the knee (except tibial).  
  • Transtibial Prosthesis. Current types of inserts, liners, suspension systems. Prosthetic feet.  
  • Knee disarticulation and transfemoral prosthesis. Prosthetic knees.  
  • Hip disarticulation prosthesis and hemipelvectomies. Hip joint.  

 

Saturday 3 October from 9am to 6.30pm

  • Complications of amputation.  
  • Rehabilitation Program for lower limb amputees.  
  • Functional assessment of the amputee patient.
  • Physiotherapy and gait reeducation in the amputee patient.  
  • Bandages in the amputee patient.
  • Practical workshops: bandages, walkers and clinical cases.  

 

2nd seminar: INTEGRAL RHB OF THE EESS AMPUTATED PATIENT

  • Epidemiology, causes and levels of amputation. Surgery of upper limb amputations.  
  • Rehabilitation program for upper limb amputee patients.
  • Psychology of the amputee
  • Prosthesis turned into art.  
  • Prosthesis in hand and forearm amputations. Prosthetic hands  
  • Prosthesis for elbow and arm disarticulations. Prosthetic elbows.

  • Occupational therapy in upper extremity myoelectric prostheses.  
  • Occupational therapy and physiotherapy in the upper limb amputee patient (non-myoelectric).
  • Pain treatments in amputee patients
  • Phantom limb pain concept. Virtual reality.  
  • Graduated motor imagery.  
  • Application of physical-therapeutic agents in neuropathic pain and phantom limb syndrome (Low and medium frequency electrotherapy).
