Presentation

The aim of the course is to train the student in the diagnosis of myofascial pain syndrome and its treatment, through the use of conservative physiotherapy techniques and invasive physiotherapy: dry needling.   

The course meets the requirements established by the association of physiotherapists of Catalonia in order to be part of the register of physiotherapists practicing dry needling. Therefore, it allows the coverage of the civil liability insurance of the association of physiotherapists.

Who is it aimed at?

This program is aimed at graduates or graduates in Physiotherapy and dual degrees in Physiotherapy-CAFE.

 

Access requirements

Diploma or graduate degree in physiotherapy or double physiotherapy-CAFE qualification.

What will the student learn?

Diagnostic and therapeutic tools to recognize myofascial pain syndrome and to treat the myofascial trigger points responsible for this syndrome.  

And the skills needed to treat them both from conservative physiotherapy and, especially, through dry needling.

Methodology

The methodology developed during the course is divided into:

  • La Theoretical part: some theoretical content will be worked on through didactic material that the student will receive through the virtual classroom, 10 days before the face-to-face sessions start, so that they can work on them outside the classroom and thus achieve participative and practical classes that they will result in deeper and more lasting learning.
  • La practical part is dedicated to carrying out exploratory and therapeutic maneuvers (especially dry needling techniques) following the demonstrative method: the teacher demonstrates and the students practice among themselves under the teacher's supervision. The seminars have been designed so that the different body regions are completed in progressive difficulty, addressing the most complex techniques in the last seminars, when the student has developed the necessary skills to execute them safely.

For the correct achievement of the contents, learning material will be provided: Sheets of the muscles to be explored and treated and the printed slides used in the course.

PRESENTIAL TRAINING

BLOCK 1. Introduction to dry needling

Review of online content: Clarification of concepts and debate.

Diagnosis of PGM.

  • Palpation type.
  • Evocation of referred pain.
  • Identification of the local spasm response.
  • Conservative treatment of PGM.

Swiss technique.

  • Theoretical exposition of relevant concepts and practical demonstration.
  • Infraspinatus muscle.
  • Upper Trapezius Muscle.
  • Levator scapula muscle.

Principles of invasive physiotherapy.

  • Dangers, complications and contraindications.
  • Theoretical exposition of relevant concepts.

Superficial Dry Puncture of Baldry.

  • Theoretical exposition of the technique.
  • Demonstration and practice of the technique in different body regions.

Deep Dry Puncture.

  • Hong's technique of rapid multiple insertions in the Infraspinatus muscle.
  • Technique of the turns of the needle on the Upper Trapezius muscle.

 

BLOCK 2. Conservative and Invasive Treatment of SDM in the hip and lower limb

Theoretical exposition of relevant concepts. Demonstration and practice of invasive treatment.

  • Gluteus muscles and tensor fascia launa.
  • quadriceps muscle
  • Sartori, pectini, adductor longus, short, major and graceful muscles.
  • Biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitendinosus muscles.
  • Gastrocnemius, soleus, popliteus, peroneus, anterior and posterior tibial muscles.
  • Extensors and flexors longus of the fingers and big toe.
  • Intrinsic muscles of the foot.

Theoretical exposition and practical demonstration of dry electropuncture.

 

BLOCK 3. Conservative and Invasive Treatment of SDM in the shoulder girdle and upper limb.

Theoretical exposition of relevant concepts. Demonstration and practice of invasive treatment.

  • Supraspinatus and deltoid muscles.
  • Biceps brachii, brachii and coracobrachial muscles.
  • triceps muscle
  • Epicondyle, epitrochlear and hand muscles.

Academic Staff

Coordination and teaching

Miguel Ángel Martínez Nogales. Physiotherapist MsC in sports physiotherapy and specialist in the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Combines clinical practice in his private practice with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Lecturer in the postgraduate course in conservative and invasive treatment (dry needling) of myofascial pain syndrome since 2012 and associate professor in the degree in physiotherapy and double degree in the degree in physiotherapy and physical activity and sports sciences of Tecnocampus, a center affiliated with Pompeu Fabra University.

 

Certificate

At the end of the course, the student will obtain a certificate awarded by TecnoCampus, a center affiliated with Pompeu Fabra University.

In order to obtain the course diploma, it will be essential for the student to attend a minimum of 80% of the training (online and face-to-face) and to pass the continuous assessment.

Students who meet these requirements will also obtain a certificate issued by Seminaris Travell and Simons. This certificate can be used to access other courses in which certain previous training in dry needling is required, both in Spain and in other training institutions in different countries, such as Switzerland or the USA. This certificate is not officially accredited by the CFC, Catalan Council for Continuing Education.
