Know and improve own and external financing strategies

During the last decade we have seen how social and solidarity economy organizations have gained an economic and social presence. Whether cooperatives, labor societies, mutuals, foundations or associations, they all face financing needs. Developing a new service or product, expanding territorially, establishing alliances to improve existing services or simply enjoying a stable cash position are actions that require good financial planning. This course is aimed at professionals who want to learn more about the internal and external financing tools specific to organizations in the social and solidarity economy. The particularities of these organizations from an organizational point of view as well as their social commitment condition the design of financing strategies and, therefore, require a detailed knowledge of the existing alternatives, their implications and the previous experiences of each case.

  • People promoting the social and solidarity economy,
  • People responsible for entrepreneurship support services,

  • Young graduates who want to pursue a professional career in the field of social and solidarity economy organizations.

What will the student learn?

The objective is to provide the necessary skills to understand and improve the internal and external financing strategies of social and solidarity economy organizations. 

Subject matter

MODULE 1. Financing in light of the SSE principle  

  • General accounting:  
    • Explanation of accounting principles.  
    • Differentiation between cash and accounting flow.  
    • Explanation of the annual accounts (BSit, PiG, ECPN, FEC).  
  • Specific accounting: How to account for:  
    • Subsidies.
    • Accruals (both for subsidies and any other type of interannual operations).
    • Accounting for movements in share capital (in cooperatives and SLs).
    • Transactions with partners (dividend or interest payments on capital), contributions in the form of loans.
    • Administrative concessions.
    • Contracts with public entities.
    • Tangible fixed assets (purchase, renovation, improvements, sale).
    • Intangible assets (rights of use and surface rights, software, R&D).
    • Taxes (both for associations, foundations, cooperatives and SL): IS, VAT.
    • Accounting for a loan (accounting, interest calculation, APR calculation. Exercises for all of this.
  • Balance sheet analysis.  
  • Practical accounting exercises and explanation of the feasibility plan. 

 

MODULE 2. Self-financing 

  • The Own Funds and the Different Legal Forms of the ESS
  • Financial Instruments I:  
    • Voluntary social capital.
    • Special participations.
    • Obligations.
  • Financial Instruments II
    • Participatory titles.
    • Participation accounts.
    • Subordinated loans. Requirements and how to articulate them.
    • Particular attention to participatory loans. Requirements and how to articulate it.
  • Tools to attract capital and equity resources.

 

MODULE 3. External financing 

  • Ethical finance in Catalonia: principles and actors in Catalonia.
  • Sources of external financing. External financing from the perspective of ethical finance. Guarantees and endorsements.
  • Key points for obtaining external bank financing (how the FFEE analyze the credits: intervention of Coop, Seira and Fiare).
  • Key points for obtaining external bank financing.
  • Issuance of securities. Differences and similarities between securities, bonds, participating securities, special shares and also the difference with voluntary capital. Bureaucratic and legal process.

 

MODULE 4 Non-repayable financing  

  • Public funding. Subsidies.
  • Crowdfunding. The Goteo experience

 

MODULE 5 Preparation of financing strategies  

  • Marketing.
  • Marketing plan and digital strategy.
  • Success stories.

Certificate

At the end of the course, the student will obtain a certificate awarded by TecnoCampus, University Center attached to Pompeu Fabra University.

To obtain the course certificate, it will be essential for the student to attend a minimum of 80% of the program sessions.
