Specialization Diploma in Personal Care in the Surgical Process

Deepen the knowledge of the surgical process, management and patient safety within the surgical area

The scope of the surgical arena is expanding more and more and requires a profile of specialist professionals who are able to adapt to the requirements of this field of work.  

Technological advances in surgery, the complexity of care, and the vulnerable situation of patients undergoing surgery are factors that require nursing professionals with specific training based on scientific evidence; in order to provide safe, effective, and quality care throughout the surgical procedure.  

For this reason, and taking into account the development of a new awareness of multidisciplinary teamwork in the surgical area, training is required that updates and enriches the abilities of nursing professionals regarding care and techniques in surgery, without considering their specialty.  

The Specialization Diploma in Personal Care in the Surgical Process deepens the knowledge, skills, skills, attitudes and values ​​of surgical nursing. 

With a program that gradually develops conceptually, the syllabus introduces the student to the model of surgical nursing in the health system, the organization of work or the characteristics of the space and instruments of the operating theatre, even the benchmark in terms related to surgical nursing such as asepsis, infection, disinfection and sterilisation, pre, intra and post operative care, sutures, anaesthesia, etc.  

One of the most relevant points of this specialization diploma training proposal is based on the entities that co-organize it: TecnoCampus Health Department - TecnoCampus Health Simulation and Innovation Center and Germans Trias University Hospital and hill 

- The Center for Simulation and Innovation in Health (CSIS): it is a center dependent on the Health Department of the Tecnocampus. CSIS aims to facilitate and promote the development and comprehensive training of health students and professionals, using the most innovative methods of learning. A new learning model that follows teaching quality standards and where innovation and research are the fundamental pillars.  

- The Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital is a public centre that provides highly complex health care to the 800.000 people living in Barcelonès Nord and the Maresme, as well as some citizens of other Catalan territories depending on the medical condition. The hospital is a reference for up to 1.200.000 inhabitants.

Who is it aimed at?

Holders of diplomas and University graduates in Nursing interested in deepening their knowledge of the surgical process, in the management and safety of the patient within this area. 

General objectives

The main objective of this Diploma of Specialization is to provide nursing professionals with a specific training that allows the acquisition of skills to attend to the person throughout the surgical process.

Specific objectives

• To develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to take care, in an integral way, of the surgical patient in the phases of the surgical procedure.
• Provide a broad view of all the components of the surgical area and the interrelationship between the different services that make it up.
• Provide knowledge for nursing professionals to master the basics of different surgical procedures: different surgical specialties and care in anaesthesia and resuscitation.
• To inform about technological advances in the field of surgery.
• Develop the knowledge and communication skills that enhance and improve the functions of the multidisciplinary team.
• Provide information on legal and ethical aspects of surgical nursing.
• Help the student to be autonomous in making decisions in situations that pose a risk to the lives of people cared for in the surgical area.

MODULE II - Anesthesia and Resuscitation (3 ECTS)

MODULE III - Patient safety (1 ECTS)

MODULE IV - Practicum (16 ECTS)

• The internships will take place at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital.

Exclusive

The duration of the course is 6 months between January and June.

The weekly dedication time of the students will be 6 face-to-face hours and 2 hours of online dedication plus the autonomous work of personal study. The care internships will last 4 weeks, completing the full day of the assigned shift.

Depending on the module and the objective of each session, the following teaching methodologies will be proposed:

Assessment

To obtain the degree, it will be essential that the participants meet the following requirements:

• Compulsory attendance at 75% of the total class contact hours
• Compulsory attendance at 95% of the total hours of care practices
• Passing the follow-up and final evaluations
• Continuous evaluation of the scheduled sessions
• Delivery and completion of the Final Project of the Diploma of Specialization/Practices

Access criteria

• Diplomas and Graduates in Nursing with a title approved in Spain.

Qualification

• Specialization Diploma issued by Pompeu Fabra University

Other certificates

• Certificate in Advanced Life Support by the Catalan Resuscitation Council (CCR) and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC).

To be able to access the Specialization Diploma, you must first apply for admission by presenting the following documentation:

• University degree or receipt 
• DNI or Passport

Once the documentation has been received and assessed, we will send you a letter of admission and once admitted you will be able to start the registration process.

To reserve a place, € 200 must be paid (this amount would only be refunded in the event of cancellation or postponement of the course). This amount will be deducted from the total registration fee.

To take into account if you are an international student:

To be able to access this specialization diploma, you must have a university degree approved in Spain, before starting the specialization diploma.

If the title is from the non-English-speaking EU, remember that a sworn translation of the title in Spanish will be required.

If the degree is not issued in an EU member state, the country's bilateral agreement with the Ministry of Education must be reviewed and, if necessary, it must be legalized (Hague Apostille) in the country where the qualification was issued.

To apply for admission, you do not need to have the degree legalized until the time of enrolment.
