Presentation

Specialized training in the assessment and individualized treatment of the critically ill.

Physiotherapy in the critically ill is becoming more and more important and present in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) of the network of public and private hospitals in our territory. It is a specialty in the field of complex and very specific physiotherapy, which is focused on the evaluation and individualized care of the patient in a critical medical situation.

The progressive introduction of physiotherapy professionals in ICUs creates the need for these professionals to acquire the necessary skills to carry out assessment, follow-up and adequate, effective and safe treatment in these hospitalization units.

Mastery in invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, assistance and collaboration during the period of disconnection from the mechanical ventilator, help in the drainage and expulsion of tracheo-bronchial secretions as well as the recovery of mobility and strength muscular, are the skills that the physiotherapy professional must master in the intensive care unit in order to be part of the multidisciplinary team that attends and oversees the healing and recovery of these patients.

Once you have completed the course you will be able to:

  • Recognize the physiology, pathology and behavior of the critically ill patient as applied to the model, techniques and instruments on which physiotherapy is based and developed.
  • Identify the factors involved in team work situations specific to the modality of care for the critically ill.
  • Recognize life-threatening situations by performing basic and advanced life support maneuvers in practical seminars and clinical simulation.
  • Identify the functional state of the user considering the bio-psycho-social assessment.
  • Integrate all the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values ​​acquired during master classes and theoretical-practical seminars, in order to train him/her for comprehensive and effective physiotherapy care for critically ill patients.

Goals

With this training, the physiotherapy specialist specializing in the critically ill will deepen the coverage of the physical, functional and cardiorespiratory needs that in most cases are altered by the pathology that causes admission to the intensive care unit. 

 

General objective:

Provide the physiotherapy professional with the necessary tools for the safe and effective assessment and treatment of the critically ill. 

 

Specific objectives:

  • Know the pathophysiology of the main diseases of the critically ill patient.
  • Identify the medical and surgical processes that are performed on the critically ill.
  • Recognize the main complications and warning signs during the stay in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • Develop a correct physical and functional assessment of the critically ill.
  • Plan an effective and safe treatment strategy for the critically ill.
  • Train professionals in the development of the main treatment techniques for patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit
  • Integrate the theoretical-practical knowledge of the interdisciplinary work of the professionals involved in the care of the critically ill
  • Interpret and apply innovative treatments based on current scientific evidence
  • Interact with the professionals who make up the intensive care health team
     

Curriculum

Module 1 Assessment and treatment of the critically ill and semi-critically ill (5 ECTS)

Subjects:

  • Assessment and treatment of the general critical patient.
  • Evaluation and treatment of the semi-critical patient.

Contents:

  • Introduction to the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Generalities and comprehensive care of the critically ill.
  • Rehabilitation in intensive care units.
  • The patient in the semi-critical, resuscitation and anesthesia unit.
  • Nursing assessment of the critically ill. 
  • Evaluation of physiotherapy in the critically ill.
  • Physiotherapy treatment of the critically ill and semi-critically ill.
  • Multiorgan dysfunction, septic shock and severe infections.  

Module 2 Assessment and treatment of the critically ill cardio-respiratory patient (4,5 ECTS)

Subjects:

  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill cardiovascular patient.
  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill patient. 
  • Invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation of the critically ill.

Contents:

  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill cardiac patient.
  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill patient.
  • Thoracic surgery: heart and lung transplant.
  • Invasive mechanical ventilation (VMI) in the critically ill.
  • Non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIVM) in the critically ill.
  • Pulmonary and diaphragmatic ultrasound of the critically ill.
  • Physiotherapy approach to the cardio-respiratory patient. 
  • Basic and advanced manual and instrumental techniques of respiratory physiotherapy for the critically ill.
  • Exercise retraining of the critically ill.

Module 3 Assessment and treatment of the critically ill pediatric patient. (1,5 ECTS)

Subjects:

  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill neonate.
  • Evaluation and treatment of the critically ill pediatric patient.  

Contents:

  • Assessment and medical treatment of the neonate in a critical situation.
  • Evaluation and medical treatment of the child in a serious situation. 
  • Physiotherapy approach to critically ill neonates and children.

Module 4 Assessment and treatment of the critically ill neurological patient. (1,5 ECTS)

Subjects:

  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill neurological patient.
  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill neuromuscular patient.

Contents:

  • Assessment and treatment of the critically ill neurological and neuromuscular patient. 
  • Myopathy acquired in the Intensive Care Unit.
  • The severe polytraumatic patient. Spinal cord injuries.
  • Physiotherapy assessment and treatment of the neurological and neuromuscular patient in the intensive care unit.
  • Respiratory muscle training in the critically ill.

Module 5 Multidisciplinary approach to the critically ill. (2 ECTS)

Subjects:

  • Assessment and multidisciplinary treatment of the critically ill.

Contents:

  • Speech therapy in the critically ill.
  • Nutrition in the critically ill.
  • Approach to veno-lymphatic edema in the critically ill patient.
  • Occupational therapy in the critically ill.
  • Psychology during the admission of the critically ill.
  • Humanization of the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Complementary therapies in the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Safety in the critically ill patient.

Module 6 Clinical simulation of the critically ill. (2 ECTS)

Subjects:

  • Assessment and multidisciplinary treatment of the critically ill.

Contents:

  • Assessment and medical assessment of the seriously ill.
  • Physiotherapy evaluation and assessment of the critically ill.
  • Clinical cases of critically ill patients.  

 

Assessment

Minimum attendance of 75% of the sessions of each seminar.

The contents of each training seminar will be evaluated individually, and a weighted average will be made with the block of the subject that makes it up. The syllabus is presented in a pedagogical way so that the students acquire the knowledge in a progressive way. It is for this reason that the weighted average of the grades will be based on the subjects that will be studied in each face-to-face seminar.

The final grade of the expert diploma course will be calculated with the weighted average of the grades of each teaching block based on the number of credits.

Requirements and degree

Diplomas or Graduates in Physiotherapy. 

No previous experience is required

Registration process

To be able to access the Expert Diploma, you must first apply for admission by presenting the following documentation:

  • University degree or receipt
  • DNI or Passport

Once the documentation has been received and assessed, we will send you a letter of admission and once admitted you will be able to start the registration process.

To reserve a place, € 200 must be paid (this amount would only be refunded in the event of cancellation or postponement of the course). This amount will be deducted from the total registration fee.

To take into account if you are an international student:

If the title is from the non-English-speaking EU, remember that a sworn translation of the title in Spanish will be required.

If the degree is not issued in an EU member state, the country's bilateral agreement with the Ministry of Education must be reviewed and, if necessary, it must be legalized (Hague Apostille) in the country where the qualification was issued.

To apply for admission, you do not need to have the degree legalized until the time of enrolment.
