"Let food be thy medicine, and food be thy medicine" – Hippocrates
This famous phrase from the father of modern medicine already recognized, more than 2.000 years ago, the essential connection between nutrition and health. Today, this link is more relevant than ever. At the GIHDiNuC group, we delve deeper into this relationship through scientific research, with the aim of contributing to individual and collective well-being, as well as to the development of a healthier and more sustainable food system.
El Research Group in Hypoxia, Dietetics, Nutrition and Kinanthropometry in Human Nutrition, Dietetics and Applied Health Sciences (GIHDiNuC) is directly linked to Degree in Human Nutrition and DieteticsThis is a multidisciplinary group that works on the generation and transfer of scientific knowledge oriented towards improving public health, collective well-being and disease prevention through research in nutrition, dietetics and related sciences.
The GIHDiNuC develops excellent basic and applied research, and promotes the incorporation of innovation, new technologies and quality teaching as strategic tools to respond to current challenges in the fields of health, food and sustainability.
- Generate relevant scientific knowledge in human nutrition and dietetics.
- Transfer this knowledge to society, health professionals and the productive fabric.
- Promote the use of new technologies applied to nutrition and dietary personalization.
- Contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially with regard to health, food safety and well-being.
- Develop innovative teaching methodologies in the field of nutrition to integrate them into university education.
The group maintains a strong commitment to the knowledge transfer to society, the promotion of healthy food policies, the design of educational strategies for the improvement of nutritional habits and collaboration with agents in the health, food and education sectors.
GIHDiNuC research also responds to the need to personalize nutritional interventions, prevent non-communicable diseases i promote active and healthy aging, with the aim of reducing the healthcare burden and improving the population's quality of life.
The group works in alignment with the guidelines of the2030 Agenda and with reference reports such as theEAT-Lancet and theUnited Nations Food Security Report, which highlight the need to move towards sustainable, safe and fair food systems.

Goals:
-Describe the eating habits of adult competitive freedivers of both sexes.
-Describe the changes in oxygen and carbon dioxide saturation produced by the ketogenic diet in both sexes.
-Describe the changes in oxygen and carbon dioxide saturation produced by a vegan diet in both sexes.
-Analyze the correlation between body composition, diet and tolerance to asphyxia in both sexes.
-Analyze the biochemical changes produced according to the type of food.
Responsible: Dr. Alicia Costa Izurdiaga
Goals:
-
Typically, to improve performance and recover faster, athletes are advised to eat more often than usual and consume larger doses of simple carbohydrates, during and after exercise. In addition, ergonutural supplements for athletes contain a large amount of food additives (artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, acidity regulators, preservatives and salts), which could be harmful to the intestinal microbiota and alter intestinal permeability. On the other hand, intense exercise can cause an increase in intestinal permeability, potentially allowing microorganisms present in the intestinal microbiota to pass into the bloodstream, which causes an inflammatory response, among others, that will limit athletic performance. In clinical practice, gastrointestinal conditions are an important cause of low performance and abandonment during endurance tests. These complications are directly related to the loss of intestinal balance, mainly linked to microbiota dysbiosis and leaky gut. Studying the intestinal microbiome, the integrity of intestinal epithelia, and the intestinal secretion of hormones and peptides may help to better understand the symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort in athletes.

Goal: The creation of a research group on aging and nutrition is highly relevant due to several interrelated factors that impact public health, quality of life and well-being of the elderly. Some key justifications are detailed below:
-Increase in the aging population
-Relationship between nutrition and healthy aging.
-Prevention of chronic diseases and complications.
-Comprehensive approach to aging.
-Innovation in the formulation of specific foods and supplements.
-Improvement of quality of life.
-Fragility and nutrition.
Head of: Dr. Sílvia Roure Díez
Goal:
-The relationship between nutrition and infectious diseases is a topic of growing relevance in global public health. Several studies have shown that the nutritional status of a population directly affects the immune response to infections, which in turn influences morbidity, mortality and the evolution of infectious diseases. Therefore, a line of research that explores this connection is presented as fundamental to comprehensively addressing public health challenges.
Responsible: Dr. Eduardo Valenciano Mendoza
Goals:
-Psychological processes involved in eating behavior.
-Promote the change of eating habits from the perspective of transactional analysis (psychological theory of communication and personality). This approach allows us to delve deeper into the emotional and social dynamics that can slow down or favor this process, emphasizing the importance of understanding the psychological motivations that influence eating behaviors to ensure long-term success.
Responsible: Dr. Marta Sánchez González
Goal:
-Establishing a line of research on the use of insects as food not only addresses issues of environmental sustainability, waste reduction, food production and nutrition, but also promotes innovation in food and diversity in our diets, which is essential for a safer and more sustainable food future.
-Allergies and intolerances to new foods. The relationship and similarity of arthropods to other foods such as seafood means that they may be susceptible to causing immune reactions.
-New foods and sports performance. It is being demonstrated that the micronutrient density of insect meals can provide micronutrients that are often deficient in modern diets. It is necessary to investigate whether they can be a potential product for sports performance.
