Description

Contemporary Television Production is part of the subject Image and independently complements the subject "Television" of the second year of the Degree in Audiovisual Media. The course aims to bring together thinking and praxis about television in different aspects such as politics, culture, sports, new audiences and the technological and social challenges facing contemporary television in Catalonia, Spain and the rest of the world.

The subject, based on the technical, narrative and teamwork knowledge already learned previously, raises the development of the critical spirit on television that is possible to produce today, in the midst of technological transformations and the need for a balance. between market, experimentation, innovation and cultural diversity.

The subject envisages, based on this knowledge of context, the development by groups of students of innovative and quality television format projects in practical sessions in which the ideation, production and realization of pilot programs will be carried out. in exteriors and, if necessary, in the equipment of set and control of the university.

Learning outcomes

Learning Resources (RA) .-

LO1. Identify the concepts of audiovisual language.

LO2. Perform a basic video post-production to assess the understanding of fundamental aspects of an audiovisual production with moving images.

LO3. Use interior and exterior lighting techniques to determine and control expressive, formal and technical quality.

LO4. Know how to work in a team and fulfill a specific role within the group that allows you to manage with maximum efficiency.

LO5. Know the current television market and know how the television industry works.

LO6. Know the structure of audiovisual companies and television channels.

LO7. Master the language of television and have notions of how to create a real program.

LO8. Have the ability to analyze television programs, understanding their language.

LO9. Acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of the different tasks when producing a television program (entertainment or informative).

LO10. Encourage the study and analysis of the audiovisual as a narrative language with the intention that the student develops his own critical and stylistic capacity when developing a project or valuing others.

Complementary learning resources (RAC) .-

RAC1. Capture and analyze current issues related to gender issues, both during the examples presented in class and in the students' own creative work.

RAC2. Adapt the works and the written part of the exam, as well as the oral presentations to the public, to the specific lexicon of the television medium and, in general, of the field of audiovisual media.

Working methodology

The subject has 2 hours per week of theory (large group, ie the whole class) and 2 hours of practice (small groups) also weekly.

The teaching methodology formula will be based on expository class sessions focused on the teacher’s explanation. Presentations and explanations by students in the classroom will also be encouraged. Teachers' readings will be accompanied by schematic presentations and audiovisual capsules that will be screened in the classroom. Occasionally there will be a lecture by a relevant speaker to complete the class explanations.

The theoretical sessions are intended for the whole class, and will consist mainly of lectures on the corresponding topic, and part will be devoted to aspects that complement the theory, such as discussion spaces, small non-evaluable monitoring activities, projection and analysis. of programs of new formats, assistance of guests or brief presentations of the chosen television format. Previously assigned readings and case studies will also be proposed to be analyzed in face-to-face forums in the classroom.

Class attendance and group activities will also have their weight in sections assigned individually to each student.

Real and current examples from the professional world will be shown.

The sessions in small groups will be of two types, which will be interspersed throughout the weeks:

On the one hand, there will be a simulated activity of a practical and long-lasting nature, of how a television program is created and produced. The interest and contributions of the students are essential to advance and increase the level of the practices.

Throughout the course, students will have to participate in a production team of a production company, which will promote, develop and fulfill its own television project format. The groups will work in coordination from the thematic proposal to the drafting of the program design dossier. The duration of the program will be approximately 15 minutes. Preferably, the programs will be designed so that they can be performed outdoors, although they may be linked, in part, whenever necessary and desirable, to interiors (television set, control).

Students will prepare a sales dossier of the final project that they will present to the teachers during the hours of directed activities; these, then, are very important and are part of the learning process and assessment.

On the other hand, there will be masterclasses, also in small groups, on practical cases that can shed light on aspects related to the professional television field, specific issues of the labor market or current topics and trends of interest.

Face-to-face and non-face-to-face tutorials will be guaranteed throughout the teaching. In this second case the student will have telematic resources such as e-mail and various resources of the virtual classroom or intranet of the Tecnocampus.

Evaluation system

The subject starts with the desire to complete the vision on television and its communicative and social phenomenon; the learning, the evolution of the student and his creativity will be highly valued, but also the critical analytical capacity applied to a solid final project and with a will of innovation and excellence. The ability to work in a team, to help solve problems and to propose effective and realistic production strategies with the available resources are key factors in the assessment of practices.

The evaluation of the subject will have the separation between content and laboratory practice. The theoretical content will be evaluated in a single exam and with class activities. The final exam will count 30% of the global mark of the subject, and it will be necessary to obtain in his evaluation a minimum mark of 5 out of 10 to be able to do average with the rest of qualifications of the subject. Class activities and individual and group exercises (Miniput, presentation of the chosen format), therefore continuous work and attendance, will count for 20%.

The evaluation of the subject will also take into account the practical activities. In their set of evaluable tasks (tasks 1, 2, 3 and 4) they account for 20% in total.

Finally, and with the aim of evaluating in an evolutionary way the progress of the television process, activity 3 (Pitching of the television format worked on, which includes the elaboration and presentation of the final dossier of the television program format project as well as its programming strategies) has 30% of the value of the final grade of the subject.

Only the theoretical part can be recovered with a resit exam.

Students who do not participate in the practical part (collaborating properly and equitably with the rest of their classmates or producer) or who do not attend the mandatory minimum sessions, will get a 0, which will be listed as a No Presented (NP) . Likewise, those students who have suspended the internships will not be able to recover them.

If you have failed, but have a part of the subject passed, no notes will be saved from one year to the next. Whoever has suspended the theory will have to repeat the theory and practices the following year. The same will happen in case of suspending the internship: you will have to repeat both the internship and the theory throughout the next course.

About misspellings and proofreading.

En el context universitari i d'educació superior, la redacció i la qüestió formal en els documents lliurats en llengua catalana i castellana són objecte d'avaluació. Misspellings are penalized with 0,25 for foul, not counting duplications. Serious inaccuracies in the wording or impossibility in understanding the text can also be penalized, with no limit as to the note. The wording in English must be appropriate and correct, although specific errors will not be taken into account at the assessment level (not so repetition or serious errors).

About plagiarism.

It is the responsibility of the student to prevent plagiarism in all its forms. In the case of detecting a plagiarism, regardless of its scope, the deliverable in question and all the activity that is part of it will automatically have a grade of 0. In addition, the teacher will inform the Head of Studies the situation so that the applicable measures in the matter of sanctioning regime are taken.
