Presentation of the subject


The subject consists of:

  • General and theoretical study of the interrelationship that exists between transport and tourism: the evolution of the different types of transport and the transport policies themselves in the EU and the rest of the world.
  •  Analysis of the incidence of transport policies versus tourist destinations.
  • Likewise, some disruptions to transport and tourism, affecting the economies of countries, are studied

The classroom (physical or virtual) is a safe space, free of sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic and discriminatory attitudes, either towards students or towards teachers. We trust that together we can create a safe space where we can make mistakes and learn without having to suffer prejudice from otherseg.

Introductory Topic: Globalization, Transport and Tourism.

Topic 1. Transport evolution, tourist destinations and Leiper's theory

Topic 2: Factors for choosing a means of transport:  Real travel time, price, comfort, autonomy, security (of the companies themselves against terrorist attacks, among others), geographical limits, environmental impact. Analysis of the weaknesses and strengths of the different means of transport.

Topic 3. Economic and social return of transport infrastructures:  High-speed rail, air transport and road transport are analyzed. Intermodality of transport. Notions of Security in Transport.

Topic 4. Railway:  Analysis of the problems of the infrastructures and the road network. Technological innovations (high speed and levitating magnetic trains). Liberalization process and free competition. Competition with air transport. Tourist trains

Topic 5. Water transport. Motorways of the sea Infrastructure analysis. Technological innovations. Skills with other means of transport. Cruises (Barcelona as base port)

Topic 6. Water transport 2: Some concepts, Cruise Regulations, Personnel on a cruise (crew) and some consumption figures on board. 

Topic 7. Road transport: Analysis of the coach and automobile sector. Technological innovations (safety of vehicles and tunnels, buses, autonomous vehicles). Sustainable mobility (alternative fuels)

Topic 8. Commercial aviation:  International organizations (IATA, ICAO) and their agreements or conventions (Warsaw, Chicago, Montreal, freedoms of the air). Airplanes (Subsonic and supersonic). Alternative fuels. Processes of liberalization and business concentration (the case of Iberia). The phenomenon of Low Cost

Topic 9Commercial aviation: 2 Air infrastructures. Characteristics of airports. Main Spanish airports under public management (AENA). Collapse of airports. Analysis of world airports and tourist traffic. The main bodies that regulate the Air Transport of passengers and their functions.

Topic 10.- The tourist transport market. Analysis of the economics of supply and demand

Topic 11.- Externalities of tourist transport I. The congestion The role of tourism in the congestion of different forms of traffic

Topic 12.- Externalities of tourist transport II. Environmental effects. The contribution of tourist transport to climate change and emission mitigation policies

Activities and evaluation system


  • 30% Exercises, practices and assignments. Not recoverable.
  • 30%  Partial evaluation (Exam). Not recoverable.
  • 40%  Final exam.
  • To pass the subject it is necessary to obtain at least a 5 in the final test.
  • A minimum of 5/10 or 10/20 on the Final Exam must be obtained to average the Final Exam grade with Continuous Assessment
  • Recovery: If the subject is suspended, only the final test can be recovered.
  • To access the recovery, the student must have taken the final test. If you go to make up and pass, the grade will be 50% for the make-up exam and 50% for the continuous assessment.
