Description

The subject belongs to the field of image, technique and content creation.

The various topics covered in the course are designed to train students to learn and deepen the audiovisual narrative with a fixed camera or with movement either in dialogues with various characters or with follow-up.

The subject enables them to work in groups, solve problems with initiative, create their own content according to an audiovisual narrative and know how to work with a professional video camera.

This subject has methodological and digital resources to make possible its continuity in non-contact mode in the case of being necessary for reasons related to the Covid-19. In this way, the achievement of the same knowledge and skills that are specified in this teaching plan will be ensured.

Working methodology

The theoretical concepts will be presented in class by the teacher. In the same way, practical exercises will be solved that illustrate the theory to generate a debate in the classroom with the participation of the students.

In the practical activities the manipulation of the audiovisual material will be carried out. Practices are a fundamental part of the classes, as they serve to show in a tangible and direct way the theoretical concepts taught in class. The internships will increase their level of complexity and consequently, the requirement in their quality and in their delivery time will be affected. Therefore, the commitment on the part of the students when delivering the audiovisual materials on time is basic.

This course, due to the situation generated by COVID, some of the large group sessions will be held in hybrid format: face-to-face and online (via streaming). This will allow students to rotate to face-to-face classes, respecting the maximum number of students per classroom imposed by the distance measures. When they are not in contact, they will be able to follow the class online from home.

With regard to internship sessions in smaller spaces (such as laboratories, studios or sets), where appropriate, work will be carried out simultaneously in several spaces in order to ensure that the conditions established by the safety protocols are met.

Learning activities

1. Practical classes:

Activities will take place on both sets. The TCM as well as the M1TV. You will be informed of the rules to follow and the terms to carry them out. It is necessary to be punctual during the Practices in set. Lack of punctuality will not be allowed. Audiovisual projects will be delivered via e-mail with a Vimeo link on the day of delivery marked by the teacher. The emails will always have the title of the internship in addition to the components that make up the working group sorted alphabetically by their last name and the project report. Any Activity that does not comply with these rules or that is delivered outside the marked date will obtain a 0 regardless of the reason for not presenting it.

The activities written individually will take into account the spelling. A serious misconduct or several minor ones will mean not being able to get more than a 5 of maximum mark in the exercise or even to suspend it. In the works a fault will discount 0,5 points, whereas in the examination will discount 0,25. Under no circumstances will an exercise outside the delivery date set by the teacher be accepted, regardless of the student's justification. The individual activities will be delivered in paper format, or through the Moodle platform. Activities without a name or without following the established presentation delivery format will not be evaluated, and the numerical grade will be 0.

In case of confinement, the following changes and adaptations will be applied in the practical activities:

ACTIVITY 1: Exquisite corpse

In groups of 5-6 students, film an exquisite corpse. The Exquisite Corpse is a game developed by the Surrealists in the 20s to create collectively without necessarily being in the same physical space Starting from a sequence / or image that teachers will offer, students must make a continuation , in the form of a narrative, which will be shared as correspondence with the next partner, who in turn collects the testimony to continue the realization. Videos can address any genre (fiction, documentary, experimental ...) from a personal point of view where everyone will control their own universe. Finally, the person in charge of the editing (who may or may not participate in the production) will receive all the videos and can play with the order, chronology and continuity of the narrative, but without losing an aesthetic vision and plot intent. There is the possibility of riding between several people - It will be explained in the virtual classrooms.

Specific objectives:

- Explore the possibilities of a collective, coherent and unified construction based on the individual imagination.

- Demonstrate competence in working with a single camera.

- Have the flexibility to work with domestic, affordable and accessible camera formats that are fundamental to guerrilla cinema.

- Reflect on the staging: Positioning of the characters / objects, lighting, composition of the plan, etc. based on a previous recording scheme.

- Choose the type of plan according to the expressive meaning of the dam.

 - Demonstrate continuity between actions and between transitions (those that relate a student's achievement to that of another student).

 - Care in choosing the location at an expressive and / or aesthetic level (even if they are domestic locations, they must be treated as essential and with the appropriate aesthetic taste).

- Demonstrate creativity and professionalism in technical and artistic quality during the production process of the audiovisual product. Learn to work in a team and to create collectively, being able to create expressive communication bridges with classmates.

Limitations:

Duration: 1 to 2 min. Number of plans: 20-25 (in final assembly). Only fixed (ie completely stable) plans are allowed

TOPIC: Finding the unusual / extraordinary within this new daily life that is living confined. No dialogues

Expressive resources:

Fixed and static camera.

EXTERNAL SOUND: environments, breathing, silence in isolated spaces, etc. Avoid jumps in ambient sound. Use sound as an expressive resource.

Desirable resources:

Game with staging background. Play with colors that convey the desired emotion. You can use sound atmospheres to accentuate emotions already outlined with cinematic resources. Diegetic music (if really necessary and expressively supports the action). Extradigetic music NO.

Support Material:

Material that the student has: mobile phone camera, video camera, tripod, sound recorder, microphones, cards, monitor, lighting equipment, etc.

Delivery:

Export in FORMAT H264. Assembly doubts can be resolved in tutorials.

 1. Audiovisual piece: link to Vimeo or Youtube (credits: title, name of the students who have participated, year, subject, etc.) It can be done privately with a password.

2. Report in pdf format. Sections of the report: -Title, name of students who have participated, subject, center, year, etc. -Introduction. -Technical script. -Incidences and how they have been resolved. -Used equipment. -Collective memory. -Conclusions.

Delivery date: Groups 101-103: 3rd week. Groups 102-104: 4th week. Groups 201-203: 3rd week. Group 202: 4th week.

ACTIVITY 2: Virtual dialogue

In groups of 5-6 students, film a dialogue between 2 characters talking on the phone or through a video call, putting into practice the knowledge and techniques explained in the theoretical and practical sessions. It is not a matter of recording a video call, but of filming the situation in which the video call is generated (in which some images of the video call itself can be used). The ideal would be a combination of these two examples: Example 1. Example 2.

  Specific objectives:

- Test the knowledge acquired in theory and in previous subjects such as Camera Techniques.

- Explore the possibilities of a collective, coherent and unified construction based on the individual imagination.

- Demonstrate competence in working with a single camera.

- Have the flexibility to work with domestic, economic and accessible camera formats, which are fundamental in guerrilla cinema.

- Reflect on the staging and issues such as the placement of the characters according to a previous recording scheme.

- Choose the type of plan according to the expressive meaning of the dam.

- Demonstrate continuity between actions and dialogue between plans.

- Care in the choice of location at an expressive and / or aesthetic level (even if they are domestic locations, they must be treated as essential and with due aesthetic taste).

- Demonstrate creativity and professionalism in technical and artistic quality during the production process of the audiovisual product. Learn to work in a team (even online).

Limitations:

Duration: 1 to 3 minutes. 20-25 shots (in final assembly)

Topic:

a) The secret

Character 1 keeps an unspeakable secret that character 2 wants to discover.

b) The lie

Character 1 tells a big lie to character 2, but in such a way that character 2 believes it (i.e., that it is plausible).

Expressive resources:

Explore the tensions between the two characters: the looks, the gestures, the intonation of the words, the off-field, the emotions, etc.

Support Material:

Material that the student has: mobile phone camera, video camera, tripod, sound recorder, microphones, cards, monitor, lighting equipment, etc.

Delivery:

1. Audiovisual piece: link to Vimeo or Youtube (credits: title, name of the students who have participated, year, subject, etc.) 2. Report in pdf format.

Sections of the report: -Title, name of students who have participated, subject, center, year, etc. -Introduction. -Technical script. -Plan scheme: position of cameras, movements, angle, types of planes, etc. -Transitions. -Incidences and how they have been resolved. -Used equipment. -Roles. -Collective memory. -Conclusions.

Delivery date: Groups 101-103: 5th week. Groups 102-104: 6th week. Groups 201-203: 5th week. Group 202: 6th week.

ACTIVITY 3: Dialogue in 2

In groups of 5-6 students, film a dialogue scene between 2 characters, falsifying the set as if the two (or 3) characters were actually present in front of or next to each other. This involves an extra effort in LOCATION CHOICE AND ESPECIALLY IN LIGHTING and the ability to use "character doubles".

Specific objectives:

- To test the knowledge acquired in theory and in previous subjects such as Chamber Techniques.

- Explore the possibilities of a collective, coherent and unified construction based on creating an illusion in the viewer, who must believe that the characters actually find dialogue in the same place.

- Demonstrate competence in working with a single camera.

- Have the flexibility to work with domestic, affordable and accessible camera formats that are fundamental to guerrilla cinema.

-Duration: 1 to 3 minutes.

-Number of plans: 20-40 maximum (in the final assembly)

-Number of characters: 2. It will be valued positively that they are 3, always according to the knowledge of triangulation explored in class.

-Choose two colors that express the personality of each of the characters. These colors must appear in each of the planes where the respective characters appear. -Extradiegetic music cannot be included.

Framing situation:

-1 character tries to get something from the other / 1 character tries to get something from the other 2 (attention, information, truth, something material, etc.) -Explore the audiovisual and expressive resources of the interaction between 2 or 3 characters (gestures, silences, interruptions ...) -Turn the scene on an "active" action. -Explore space resources: what one character sees and the other (or others do not); or what the viewer sees, but one of the characters does not, and so on.

Script:

Build a dialogue in which they come out (at least 6) of a series of words administered by the teachers. You also have the possibility of continuing activity 2 narratively. Dialogues can be done in Catalan by translating the words.

Material:

Material that the student has: mobile phone camera, video camera, tripod, sound recorder, microphones, cards, monitor, lighting equipment, etc.

Delivery:

1. Dialogue: link to Vimeo, Youtube or similar. - Credits: title, name of the students who have participated, actors, year, subject, etc. 2. Report in pdf format. Sections of the report: -Title, name of students who have participated, subject, center, year, etc. -Introduction. -Script and marking of the same. -Technical script. -Plan scheme: position of cameras, movements, angle, types of planes, etc. -Incidents and how they have been resolved. -Used equipment. -Roles. -Collective memory. -Conclusions. -Link to the video.

Delivery date: Groups 101-103: 9th week. Groups 102-104: 10th week. Groups 201-203: 9th week. Group 202: 10th week.

Important Note: All written exercises will take into account spelling and the fact that they are written impersonally. You need to number the pages (the cover, no). Each foul will deduct 0,5 points. In no case will an exercise be accepted outside the delivery date set by the teacher, whatever the justification of the student or group. Activities without a name or without following the established presentation delivery format will not be evaluated and the numerical mark will be zero.

In case of confinement, the following changes and adaptations will be applied in the theoretical activities:

  • Activity 4: It will become a written exercise, to be done individually or in groups and subject to the instructions administered by the teachers.

Evaluation system

The evaluation of the subject is separated between theoretical content, taught in class, and practice in the laboratory (set).

The theoretical content will be evaluated in a test (Final Exam) that will suppose 40% of the final note of the asignatura. There will also be practical theoretical work. The work will be related to issues of staging and narrative language and will take place during one of the theoretical sessions. The sum of the grade for this work will be 10% of the final grade.

The practices will be scored as follows: Activity 0 will be worth 5% of the final grade; activity 1 will be worth 10% of the final grade; Activity 2 will be worth another 10% of the final grade of the subject; and finally the 3 25%. An undelivered Activity will be equivalent to a 0 of numerical mark. In the latter case, 15% will be evaluated by the internship teacher and 10% by the theory teacher (the theoretical part could consist of the piece + a presentation of the students explaining its characteristics with respect to the staging).

Apart from the activities mentioned, there will be a voluntary option that will consist of presenting a project at the Calella Film Festival. Those who participate in the contest will receive an extra 5% on their grade. There may also be several voluntary activities in the theoretical classes that will mean an extra 1% in the final grade.

To be able to average, the mark of the theoretical exam must be at least a 5.
To be able to average, the mark of the set of the three practices will have to be at least of a 5.

In case of failing the theoretical exam, the recovery will consist of a theoretical exam of all the content of the subject that will average with the average mark of the practices (if these are approved) and with the marks of the rest of activities. Only those students who have taken the final exam can apply for recovery (all those students "not presented" in the first call do not have the option to take the recovery). The minimum mark to pass this exam will also be a 5, otherwise the subject will be suspended.

In case of suspending the practical part of the subject, the student will have to realize an individual activity of recovery that will equivalent to 40% of the practical percentage of the subject. The minimum grade to pass this test will also be a 5, otherwise the subject will be suspended.
Those students who have not presented themselves in the internships during the term will not be able to access this recovery practice and their grade will include a Not Presented. The internship grade will not be saved from one course to another.

Summing up:

Activity 0 (Scenario): 5% of the grade
Activity 1 (Dialogue 2 characters): 10% of the grade.
Activity 2 (Dialogue 3 characters): 10% of the grade.
Activity 3 (Pursuit): 25% of the grade (= 15% practice + 10% theory)
Activity 4 (Work in the theoretical class): 10% of the mark.
Activity 5 (Final Exam): 40% of the mark.

Total: 5%+10%+10%+25%+10%+40%=100%

Regarding possible modifications in the evaluation system for the Covid-19, and specifically in case of confinement:

-Activity 0 will be canceled and Activity 3 will be worth 30% of the final grade.
