The Ministry of Science and Innovation, through the State Research Agency, has selected and financed the Not Alone project, from the Chair of Aging and Quality of Life at the TecnoCampus, which was presented at the call for the " State Plan for Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research 2021-2023" in the "Knowledge Generation 2022" mode.

In Spain, women over 65 represent 11% of the total population, compared to 8,4% of men. Greater life expectancy does not always mean a better quality of life; in fact, women often live longer but in worse health conditions.

The project "The feminization of unwanted loneliness in older people; how to deal with it (Not Alone)" addresses the phenomenon of loneliness in women over 65. The effect that loneliness has on the physical and mental health of older women is so important that it deserves to be studied and addressed comprehensively by health and social professionals. "Not Alone" is a project led by Esther Cabrera, coordinator of the Consolidated Research Group on Chronic Care and Innovation in Health and director of the chair. It has the participation of the Mataró City Council. The project researchers are Meritxell Puyané, Carolina Chabrera, Ester Mateo, Ester Limón, Carme Planas, Enric Camón, Marc Terradellas, Judit Castellví and Charo Delgado. A multidisciplinary team of professional nurses, psychologists, social workers, and doctors who work in the field of aging and their main objective is to deepen the phenomenon of unwanted loneliness.

The project has obtained funding of €100.400, with a duration of four years. Its purpose is to investigate the prevalence and the factors that intervene and trigger loneliness among women over 65 years old in Mataró. In addition, through a qualitative study, the project will deepen the experiences, perceptions and feelings of older women who feel alone. The first two phases of the study will culminate in the development of a predictive model that allows the rapid identification of women at risk of experiencing unwanted loneliness and their problems related to their physical and mental health.

As a result of this research, it is planned that two doctoral theses will be carried out in the GRACIS group. Over time, the relationship between loneliness and gender will change. From the chair, it is pointed out that "if we want to understand the phenomenon of loneliness and mitigate its effects on women's health from a gender perspective, we must be aware of all the factors that can affect this scenario and how health and social professionals can identify them."
