Last Thursday, February 17, the conference "Financial Tsunamis: Values and Law" was held at the TecnoCampus, by Dr. Enric R. Bartlett, Professor of Law and currently working as Dean of the ESADE School of Law.

Dr. Bartlett reviewed the situation that has led us to what he calls a financial “tsunami,” as a metaphor for the devastating effects this financial crisis has had on our society.

According to Dr. Bartlett, the legal system (his field of knowledge) is at the service of the core values that inspire a society. To give an example, if we consider that everyone has the right to insured medical care is when the legal system defines health care as a "public good." In financial matters the exact same thing happens. And that is why until the values of society change, a stricter and more global regulation of the financial system will not be possible.

As the speaker stated, one of the worst things that can happen to us as a society is that we have not learned anything from this crisis, and that it has not meant a change in values within society. And, according to Enric Bartlett, this is currently the case.

The conference is part of the cycle Economy and Values, organized by the Cultural Association Values with the collaboration of the TecnoCampus Mataró-Maresme.
