A conference highlights the role of cooperatives and self-consumption in the energy transition

TecnoCampus hosted the conference “"Democratizing energy: social economy for a just transition", which is part of the nomination of Mataró as the capital of the social economy 2026 by the Government of Spain.

The mayor of Mataró and president of TecnoCampus, David Bote, has highlighted energy as "a pillar of the democratic system" that administrations and companies must support, and has asked for citizens' understanding when it is necessary to implement infrastructures related to renewable energies. 

Amparo Merino, Secretary of State for Social Economy of the Government, and Joan Groizard, Secretary of State for Energy, have pointed out that promoting self-consumption is one of the commitments of the Government of Spain for the energy transition, for which they have pointed out that cooperatives must play a key role in self-consumption communities. 

In the round table with representatives of cooperatives and energy communities, the institutions that participated (Unión Renovables, Ecooo, Som Energia, GoiEner and La Corriente) have highlighted the difficulties and the need for citizen involvement in a complex model designed for the long term, with values ​​that go beyond achieving a competitive price for energy. As for the administrations, they have demanded differential treatment with respect to large energy companies in taxation or in energy auctions, as well as reducing bureaucracy and obstacles by distribution companies. 

In closing, the Director General of Energy, Daniel Pérez, highlighted that renewable energies are more ecological, sustainable and economical to produce, but that progress must be made in storing them so that green energy is also cheap at night. 

To close the event, the general director of TecnoCampus, Josep Lluís Checa, highlighted the importance of the "story" to convey to citizens both the importance of renewable energies and the social economy.
