The ”la Caixa” Foundation has awarded the Chair of Aging and Quality of Life at the TecnoCampus a financial grant in the framework of the 2022 call for the Program of Grants for Social Initiatives Projects of the La Caixa Social Work, for carry out a preventive project against the loneliness of the elderly in the Maresme.

The program will give support for older people so that they can mentor people at risk of unwanted loneliness through the peer learning methodology. The "Junts" peer help program for seniors is a program driven by the Chair of Aging and Quality of Life at the TecnoCampus, attached to the Pompeu Fabra University, which will have the collaboration of the Federation of Older People's Associations of Catalonia (FATEC) and the support of the town councils of Argentona, Mataró, Calella and Pineda de Mar.

The aim is to create a network of peers among older people, by carrying out training workshops for volunteers over the age of 65 from the Maresme region so that they have the knowledge to help early detect elderly people at risk of unwanted loneliness. The workshops that these volunteers will receive must help them have emotional, digital and social support tools that they can use to detect situations at risk of loneliness among their peer group; elderly people around them.

The detection in the initial phase of these situations, before they become permanent, through the development of a network close to their environment, will allow the beneficiaries to feel accompanied and that they can develop activities that make them feel useful and socially active. The final objective is to find solutions based on research and to improve in this way the health and quality of life of the elderly in the territory.

Beyond financial support, this program aims to promote the knowledge transfer in the field of health encouraging personalized mentoring activities and expert support. The project is endowed with funding of 20.410 euros and is included in the area of ​​action for the elderly and challenges arising from aging.
