The official presentation will be on Monday, February 9 at TecnoCampus, with the presence of the Minister of Labor and Economy and the Minister of Economy and Finance of the Generalitat. The former Prime Minister of Italy, Enrico Letta, will give the opening conference.

Last October, the Second Vice President and Minister of Labor and Economy, Yolanda Díaz, announced that Mataró had been chosen as the Spanish Capital of the Social Economy 2026. Thus, today this year begins to unfold, which aims to position Mataró and its ecosystem of companies (cooperatives, labor societies, special social initiative work centers, insertion companies or mutual societies, among others) as a state reference node in the development of the economic, social, cooperative and solidarity model. 

The City Council of Mataró has the support of the TecnoCampus Chair of Social Economy (TCM). This initiative is promoted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy with the participation of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Provincial Council of Barcelona and in collaboration with the Network of Municipalities of the Social and Solidarity Economy (XMESS) and the Spanish Confederation of Social Economy Businesses (CEPES).

Mataró takes over from Murcia and before that were Valencia, San Sebastián, Santiago de Compostela and Teruel. It is the first Catalan city to have this title and also the first to obtain it without being a provincial capital. The capital status, which has as its motto "Reduce inequalities, create the future", will begin the annual program next Monday, February 9, at 11:30 a.m., with an event at the TecnoCampus. 

The event will be the official presentation and inauguration of the capital and will consist of different parts. It will begin with the welcome and presentation by the second deputy mayor and councilor for Prosperous City, Wealth Generation and Decent Work, Sergi Morales, and will continue with speeches by the minister, Yolanda Díaz; the Minister of Economy and Finance of the Generalitat, Alícia Romero; the mayor of Mataró, David Bote; the president of the Social Sustainability, Life Cycle and Community Area of ​​the Barcelona Provincial Council, Alba Barnusell; and the president of CEPES, Antoni Pedreño. 

During the event, the Centre for Analysis and Development of the Social Economy of Catalonia (CADESC) will be presented by Eloi Serrano, director of CADESC and the Chair of Social Economy, and Juanjo Llopis, president of CADESC. Afterwards, the former Prime Minister of Italy and current Dean of the IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs and President of the Delors Institute, Enrico Letta, will give the conference “Main Challenges of Europe as an Opportunity for the Social Economy”. 

In the afternoon, the Youth Network Alliance for the Social Economy will be launched with the presence of the Minister of Labor and Economy and the Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Rego, in addition to different youth and social economy organizations. 

The starting shot was given today at the Nau Gaudí by the mayor, David Bote, the councilor for Economic Promotion, Sergi Morales, and the director of the Chair of Social and Solidarity Economy at TecnoCampus and commissioner of this capital, Eloi Serrano, who presented the initiative at a press conference. The event also included interventions by the general director of Social and Solidarity Economy and Cooperativism of the Generalitat de Catalunya, David Bonvehí, and the head of the Technical Office of Strategies for Economic Development of the Barcelona Provincial Council, M. Sol Lage.
