Professor Marcos Faúndez Zanuy has been appointed as one of the two members representing Spain in the Management Committee of the European COST Action eVoiceNet, an ambitious project dedicated to promoting the development and implementation of vocal biomarkers in Europe.

This action, officially called the European Network to Advance the Development and Implementation of Vocal Biomarkers (COST Action CA24128), brings together an extensive international network of specialists to address the main technical, ethical, clinical and regulatory challenges that currently hinder the incorporation of this technology into healthcare practice.

Vocal biomarkers are characteristics of the voice—or other respiratory sounds such as coughing or breathing—that can be linked to medical conditions. Thanks to recent advances in artificial intelligence and signal processing, these biomarkers have the potential to transform the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of a wide range of diseases, including neurological disorders, respiratory problems, mental health disorders, and systemic diseases.

Despite this potential, the field still faces significant challenges: lack of standards, difficulties in obtaining quality data, privacy and data protection challenges, and limited clinical validation. For this reason, eVoiceNet has been created with the aim of building a solid European framework that promotes multidisciplinary collaboration, knowledge generation, data availability and harmonization of good practices in this area.
