Presentation

The School of Social Sciences and Business of the TecnoCampus (ESCSET) has become a university reference point since it began its activity twenty-five years ago, as the University School of the Maresme (EUM), in the old Nautical Club of Mataró. It has been two decades of university career under the auspices of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), of which it is part as an affiliated center. This differentiating fact has made it possible to teach official degrees issued by this university and to be governed by its academic regulations.

UPF is synonymous with quality, as one of the universitats més prestigioses de l’Estat Espanyol. In some areas, such as Economics and Business, it is considered one of the most internationally recognised.

Over the course of these two decades of academic activity, some 17.000 students have passed through our classrooms. This background has also allowed ESCSET to generate its own, unique and differentiating stamp. The Center has always been committed to a training offer that allows its differentiation within the system, degrees that are able to generate its own demand and do not depend on the surpluses of the great metropolis.

The idea is to offer business studies courses which complement those which are offered by UPF and have the added bonus of being installed in a Science and Innovation Park. Therefore, in line with TecnoCampus policy of quality, the ESCSET is committed to an academic model of high quality and strongly professionalised that, linked to the business network of the region, ensures the quality of education offered by the degrees taught there and act as a generator of human capital and progress on the social scale.

The ESCSE currently teaches the degree in Business Administration and Innovation Managementdegree in Tourism and Leisure Management, degree in Marketing and Digital Communitiesdegree in Logistics and Maritime Business and the degree in Business Administration and Innovation Management (taught in English).

In recent years, the School has been committed to innovation in the teaching field, implementing added value in the degrees that already existed in the market, or generating new ones in unusual areas or in the process of development. This roadmap is also reflected in the double degrees currently taught at the ESCSE, those of Tourism / AdE and those ofAdE / Marketing. These educational programs have been a highly successful as they allow you to obtain two official Bachelor's degrees in just five years.

The School of Social and Business Sciences completes its offer with the Master's degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the Master's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain and Maritime Business, as well as other unofficial graduate programs.

ESCSET's strategy when programming the educational courses it offers is to configure qualifications with unique and innovative elements that allow it to differentiate itself within the system. So that they are able to generate their own demand and not depend on the overspill from the great metropolis. The idea is to offer business studies courses which complement those which are offered by UPF and have the added bonus of being installed in a Science and Innovation Park. They should also be highly professionalised, add value and become an engine for economic growth in the region. It is with this strategy that both the Bachelor's and Master's degrees that are currently taught at the centre contain common elements that constitute the backbone and together allow them to singularise and offer a certain identity. These elements are as follows:

a) Cross-disciplinary training in Business: all titles contain a minimum of 60 ECTS with contents of administration and organization of companies. The aim is that, despite the curricular intensification in one or other subjects of the different degrees, the graduates of the centre have a competence profile that allows them to understand and manage the basic aspects of business management.

b) Entrepreneurship and Innovation: entrepreneurial skills, creativity and predisposition in attitudes and aptitudes to innovate have become objectives and strategic axes that have been present in all curricula, either through specific subjects in entrepreneurship and innovation, or through other subjects where these skills are assessed, such asEntrepreneurial Itinerary. It is worth mentioning in this sense that each year more than half of the Final Degree Projects (TFG) carried out in the different degrees are business creation projects or new lines of business in already created companies. Some of these projects are already business realities.

c) Professionalisation: all ESCSET Degrees contain Compulsory External Internships with loads of at least 12 ECTS. This means that all graduates will have spent around 350 hours in a company or institution to complete their theoretical training.

d) Teaching Innovation and Digitisation: this is one of the clearest bets of the centre. The experimentation of new teaching strategies (Case methodology, Design ThinkingVisual ThinkingPuppet Show, revitalisation of digital collaborative spaces, etc.) and new physical spaces that favour an innovative class format -space BusinessLab- are some of the tools used to improve student participation and practical training. Also noteworthy is the commitment to the digital profile of students, making it possible to acquire computer and information skills as a key element in their entry into the university world.

e) Internationalization: Strategies are established in order to improve the internationalisation of the centre and achieve the goal of being at least 5% of the students enrolled to study part of their studies each year. The strategies are as follows: i) inclusion of language subjects in all the Curricula organised by levels; ii) teaching of the Degree in AdE and GI in English; iii) creation of the International Relations and Professional Careers service at TecnoCampus, which facilitates, together with the centre's international managers, the management of mobility, the establishment of international contacts and the signing, monitoring and updating of agreements.

Languages in the ESCSET

The vehicular languages in our degrees are Catalan and Spanish, official languages of Catalonia. The language of instruction will be indicated in the syllabus of the subject for each group of students. However, in order to equip students with the skills and abilities to work in the business world, knowledge of other foreign languages, at least English, is required.

In accordance with the provisions of the Law 1 / 2018 of the Parliament of Catalonia, students who begin their undergraduate studies from the 2018-2019 academic year will have to prove their knowledge of a third language at the end of their studies. The ESCSET, in order to guarantee compliance with this essential requirement, includes compulsory and optional foreign language subjects in all curricula that allow the student to reach the required minimum level, with a level equivalent to B2.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe. At the end of their studies, students will be able to obtain an official certificate accrediting their level if they wish (with the payment of the fees for issuing the certificate: indicative price € 30). This certificate will be issued by UPF languages.

Thus, at ESCSET students receive 90 hours of Language classes per year despite enrolling in only 6 ECTS each year, as according to the CEFR this is the optimal number of hours per level. In addition, the student enrolls at the level that corresponds to them regardless of the course in which they are enrolled, in this way they are able to improve more efficiently. To make this possible, the centre reserves weekly time slots in which only Languages are offered. In terms of languages, ESCSET currently offers six levels of English, two in German, one in French and one in Russian, with the idea that the latter three will be able to offer a higher level each year.

In order to diagnose the level of the English language at the beginning of the degrees, all new students must take a Language Diagnostic Test (PDL) specific to the UPF Language Program, which is organised between September and October. Depending on the results obtained, students will be distributed at different levels A2, B1, B2.1 and B2.2.

The student who can accredit the B2.2 level or higher of English must present an accrediting certificate together with a photocopy of the same on the day of registration and is exempt from taking the test, and may choose to study during their course a higher level of English or another foreign language.
If the student has a certificate of level B2.2 or higher in German, French or Italian, they must present the original and a copy on the day of registration. This student will already comply with the legal requirements for accreditation of the third language to obtain the Degree, but will have to do the PDL of English to be able to establish the level to study of this language in the subjects of Foreign Language of the respective Curriculum.

Furthermore, we want to help all students achieve a good level of competence in a third language, which is why the School of Social and Business Sciences opens its language classrooms to anyone of legal age, with preference to students and Alumni of the TecnoCampus. See theOpen language classroom, for the selection of courses.

History

The School of Social and Business Sciences-TecnoCampus (ESCSET) began its activities in the 1994-95 academic year, attached to Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). The fact that ESCSET is affiliated to UPF means that the official degrees are issued by this University and that the academic regulations governing ESCSE's studies are also the same as those of this University. This unit is a source of pride for the School of Social and Business Sciences, because UPF is one of the most prestigious universities in Spain and, in some areas, such as Economics and Business Studies. Company, one of the most prestigious internationally.

In 2009, the ESCSET was integrated into the Tecnocampus Science and Innovation Park together with the other university center in the city of Mataró, thePolytechnic University School (EUPMt), affiliated to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. In the 2010-11 academic year theSchool of Health Sciences was created, also as part of the TecnoCampus and affiliated to the UPF. Today, the three centres, together with the Business Area, constitute one of the most modern and most projected university models in Catalonia. Its strong territorial role of commitment to the social and economic environment is offset by a clear international vocation, as it corresponds to the “universality” of the university institution.

The building where the TecnoCampus is located was conceived and designed for university studies and contains all the necessary infrastructures to carry out quality university activity in its many facets. At TecnoCampus you can share university life with a diverse, multidisciplinary community, and this undoubtedly enriches the stage of university higher education for our students. The campus has multiple services, transversal to all the centres and degrees, such as the Library-CRAI, the Unit of Attention to the University Community (UACU), the service of Internationalisation, the Internships and Labour Insertion, the Tecnodidactic Unit or InnoLab (laboratory for innovation and pre-incubation of business projects).

At ESCSET the degree in Business Administration and Innovation Management, the degree in Business Administration and Innovation Management (taught in English), the degree in Tourism and Leisure Management, degree in Marketing and Digital Communities, Master's degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Master's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain and Maritime Business and other unofficial graduate programs. In addition, the ESCSET also offers double degrees, the of Tourism / AdE and that ofAdE / Marketing. These educational programs have been a highly successful as they allow you to obtain two official Bachelor's degrees in just five years.

At ESCSET we have made sure that our offer has its own, unique and differentiating stamp, and we have done so with an emphasis on involvement with companies, international relations and entrepreneurship and innovation, which although For some time now, they have been distinctive features of the ESCSE, and with their integration into the TecnoCampus Park, they have been consolidated and strengthened, acquiring more prominence and visibility in the curricular development of students. Another aspect to highlight is the highly professional nature that we want to give to our graduates. That is why we have adopted the “case methodology” as a teaching method, as well as the compulsory practices and the presence of professionals in the classrooms as determining elements for the student to get to know the business realities and the tourism sector, always dynamic. and changing.

ESCSET has a long list of companies that, whether through internships, employment, scholarships or advice, have provided their unconditional collaboration to the School since its inception; and it also has an extensive list of foreign universities and colleges with which it maintains relationships to facilitate and ensure that students who wish to do so can stay there with academic recognition. Finally, the fact that the School is part of a Science and Innovation Park facilitates the training of enterprising people, able to respond to the new challenges that our society as ours, immersed in a major crisis of production model, you need to deal with it in the short term.

On the other hand, it should be noted that ESCSET remains firm in its commitments and responsibilities towards the social environment, attentive to the requirements that society expects from a university center strongly involved in the territory. One of the objectives of the ESCSE, shared with the titular entity, is that the School is not socially discriminatory, which is why from its beginnings it has sought the involvement of companies and institutions to create a bag of scholarships to help students finance their studies, and also committed to be actively involved in all matters that affect and concern a society like ours in order to make it fairer, more sustainable and more egalitarian. .
