Description


  The subject of Fundamentals of Physiotherapy is a compulsory training of the degree of Physiotherapy.

It will develop the foundations of Physiotherapy throughout history, both in its most procedural part and in basic theoretical aspects. The essential elements of the future physiotherapist's intervention are described, taking into account the physical therapeutic principles, their application, the benefits and adverse effects, as well as the duration and frequency of the treatment interventions proposed by the physiotherapist.

This subject consists of a theoretical block and a practical block:

  • Theoretical block (4 ECTS credits): fundamentals and procedures of physiotherapy
  • Practical block (6 ECTS credits): passive kinesitherapy and massage therapy

This subject aims to introduce the gender perspective in its content and development.

Learning outcomes


LO20.Identify the main physical agents used in physiotherapy interventions. Classify them according to their effect and importance and establish the order of priorities in their therapeutic application.

LO21. Analyze the patient's expectations regarding their evolution, demand and needs

LO22.Elaborate the intervention protocol based on the joint negotiation between the therapist and the patient

LO23. Carry out a physiotherapy diagnosis to determine the deficiencies, limitations on activity and restrictions on participation that will require a specific Physiotherapy intervention.

LO25.Learn the basics of Physiotherapy in musculoskeletal pathologies, specific evaluation of musculoskeletal dysfunctions. Main intervention techniques. Classification based on its physical principles and effects on the body

The final grade of the course will consist of the three blocks with the following weighting: 40% theoretical block, 30% practical block of massage therapy and 30% practical block of passive kinesitherapy. 

To pass the subject, you must pass the three specific blocks separately. It will be necessary to pass the final exam of the theoretical block and the practical block of passive kinesitherapy with a grade equal to or higher than 5 to make an average with the rest of the evaluation activities of the block.

It is mandatory to attend 80% of the classes in each of the practical blocks, failure to do so will result in the suspension of the subject without the option of recovery, so you will have to take a the subject again the following academic year.

The total or partial copy in any of the learning activities will mean a "Not Presented" in the subject, without option to present in the proof of recovery and without prejudice of the opening of a file for this reason. ”

Recovery period

Students will have the option to retake the subject when they have taken the final exam in each of the blocks and have not passed the subject. Non-Presented activities cannot be recovered.

Theoretical block

In the event that the final exam has not been passed, a test exam will be carried out to pass the theoretical block, which will be weighted with the other activities. In the event that the student has passed the final exam but has not passed the theoretical block, the recovery will consist of an exam of open questions to be developed, which must be passed with a minimum grade of 5. The mark obtained from this exam final will be weighted average with the mark of the final exam passed.

 

Practical block

- Passive kinesitherapy: activities linked to the e-portfolio will not be retrievable. The recovery of this block will consist of a practical test.  

- Massage therapy: the grades obtained in the continuous assessment will be kept as part of the final mark of the subject, both those passed and those not passed, in order to preserve the criteria of the continuous assessment, maintaining the same weighting as in the first call The activities linked to the e-portfolio cannot be recovered. The recovery of this block will consist of a practice test.

Health

It will be mandatory to attend 80% of the hours of the practical blocks in order to pass the subject, failure to do so will result in the suspension of the subject without the option of recovery, so the subject will have to be taken again the following academic year.

Rules of conduct

Attending class without respecting the basic rules of hygiene and uniform dress may be sanctioned. 

During the class practices and especially during the assessment tests, students will not be able to wear objects that may interfere with the execution of the techniques, such as rings, watches, bracelets, long earrings, etc. Also, hand hygiene will be paramount, with short, clean, unpainted cut nails.

Given the practical nature of the classes and to facilitate and perform in a correct way the manual palpation procedures and the execution of the evaluation tests, it will be necessary to wear appropriate clothing such as shorts and top, considering that in many situations the evaluated anatomical region must be devoid of clothing to be able to observe and palpate the anatomical reliefs.
