The Som Hackathon is a creative and training event organized by the TecnoCampus of Mataró together with the City Council of Mataró and SomMobilitat, and is sponsored by Accenture. Over the course of a weekend, this event invites high school, high school, college and graduate programmers to solve a challenge related to innovation, technology and the environment.

In the sixth edition of the WE ARE Hackathon, to be held on April 1, 2 and 3, the challenge will be related to the circular economy. Specifically, event participants will be encouraged to think and develop transformative technology solutions that help them migrate to a sustainable growth model over time, drive resource optimization, reduce raw material consumption, and recover waste. .

The circular economy is a new model of production and consumption based on the functioning of nature and ensuring sustainable growth over time. With the circular economy, resources can be optimized, raw material consumption reduced and waste recovered by recycling or giving it a second life as a new product.

The circular economy makes it possible to generate a paradigm shift in business processes, from a linear to a circular cycle, from throwing waste to revaluing it, from an unsustainable model to a sustainable model over time. In this way, it provides consumers with more durable and innovative products, reducing scheduled obsolescence and adapting products to the real needs of consumers. As Marco Antonio Rodríguez, coordinator of the Som Hackathon and professor of the Degree in Video Game Design and Production at TecnoCampus, explains, there are different techniques for advancing towards the circular economy. Among them, ecodesign, remanufacturing or servitization (converting consumer goods into services, such as bicing) are some of the ways to extend the life of products and reduce or eliminate the environmental impact.

The Som Hackathon is open to students from all over Catalonia and its winners can win a total of 3.000 euros in prizes. Specifically, a prize of 2.000 euros is awarded to be distributed among the members of the team and direct access to the TecnoCampus pre-incubation program, and a mention to the secondary and training cycle teams valued at 1000 euros. In this hackathon, different teams are created, mostly made up of engineering and video game students. One or two students from other degrees such as marketing and digital communities, Tourism, Audiovisual Media, Business Administration and Health Sciences, etc. can join each team. In addition, it is also open to 2nd year high school science and technology students and CFGS, who preferably have knowledge of programming, interface design, web and video game design. The teams also have academic and industry mentors, Rodriguez says.

The Som Hackathon of the TecnoCampus is an initiative of the ecosystem of the social and solidarity economy and of the consumer cooperative movement that transforms strategic sectors such as energy, telecommunications and mobility.
