International Week Barcelona

 
Innovation in Higher Education

 

Innovation in Higher Education is an International Week organized by TecnoCampus, a university center affiliated to Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a technology park. TecnoCampus brings together academia and business in a single space devoted to innovation and entrepreneurship. Based in the Catalan city of Mataró, 20 kilometres outside Barcelona, TecnoCampus aspires to be both a national and an International project, as weell as a powerful driver of regional econòmic and social transformation. 

 

This program is aimed at university professionals seeking to foster innovation in their institutions. Over the course of four days, participants will explore strategies and tools to transform academic, administrative, and management processes, with a special focus on creativity, entrepreneurship, and the application of new technologies. 

The program combines practical sessions with visits to the entrepreneurial ecosystem of TecnoCampus and Barcelona’s 22@ innovation district. It also provides a unique opportunity to share experiences with professionals from around the world and build new institutional collaborations.

10:00 –13:00 Seminar: "Rethinking the Routine: Embedding Innovation in your University" 

  • Boosting intrapreneurial skills to drive change from within 
  • Designing, implementing and sustaining workplace innovation initiatives 

With John Correa, PhD-Entrepreneur & Co-founder of Bambai. University lecturer in “Technology-Based Business Creation.” PhD in Law, Economics & Business, specialized in developing entrepreneurial soft and hard skills. 

13:00 – Lunch at TecnoCampus 

18:00 – Guided tour of Mataró city center and local gastronomic experience

Discover the entrepreneurial ecosystem at Tecnocampus and explore some of its standout entrepreneurs and the incubators and accelerators driving innovation: 

  • ThinkIn 3D Mataró – Accelerating the adoption of 3D printing as a driver of competitiveness, with a special focus on healthcare and cross-industry solutions. 
  • Antena TrenLab – Renfe’s startup accelerator, building an open innovation hub for mobility, transport, and logistics technologies. 
  • Reimagine Textile – Catalonia’s first textile & fashion incubator with a global vision, offering cutting-edge facilities and support for innovation and sustainability. 
  • Tecnocampus Incubator – A launchpad for new ventures, hosting 20 startups across health, technology, and business sectors with plug & play infrastructure and tailored services.

Staff Week 2

10:30 – 12:30 Visit to 22@, the innovation district of Barcelona 

22@Barcelona: from industrial past to innovation hub. 200 hectares of former industrial land in Poblenou have been transformed into a vibrant district designed for knowledge-based industries. More than an urban regeneration project, 22@ is a new city model—driving innovation, talent, and sustainable growth in the knowledge economy.

14:00 – 15:00 Visit to Tech Barcelona 

Tech Barcelona is a non-profit association driving the city’s digital and tech ecosystem. Its mission: connect startups, boost visibility, and catalyze innovation with corporations through its Venture Builder programs. 

During the visit, we’ll explore the Barcelona Digital Talent headquarters and join a session with one of the entrepreneurs based in Tech City.

Staff Week 3

09:00 – 12:30 Seminar: "Smart Innovation: Applying AI to Transform Your Daily Work in the University" 

  • Introduction to AI for non-technical university staff – Understand what AI is (and isn’t) in academia. 
  • Everyday tools: ChatGPT, Copilot & beyond – Explore AI tools that boost teaching, admin, and research productivity. 
  • Streamlining workflows with AI – Automate reports, emails, scheduling, grading, and more. 
  • Personalizing the student experience with AI – Examples from advising, admissions, and student support. 
  • Ethics, risks & next steps – Use AI responsibly and stay ahead in this fast-changing landscape. 

With Pedro Rojas. Pedro holds a degree in Business Administration and a Master’s in Social Media Management and Strategy. He works as a consultant in artificial intelligence applied to educational institutions and businesses. He is also a professor of Digital Marketing with AI at several universities and business schools across Europe and Latin America, as well as the author of six books on digital strategy.
